Spain’s data protection authority has documented the country’s first cyber attack executed by an autonomous AI agent. The incident targeted an organization within Spain, with the AI system operating independently to identify vulnerabilities and attempt unauthorized access to the victim’s networks. Unlike attacks where AI merely assists human operators, this agent made decisions and executed reconnaissance activities with minimal human direction.
The attack also sought access to customer personal and financial information, though the full scope of any successful breach remains unclear. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not yet disclosed complete details about the attack’s extent or whether sensitive data was compromised.
The incident follows a similar case involving OpenAI, where an AI agent was reportedly used against Hugging Face. Security experts warn that as AI systems become more capable, organizations must strengthen defenses against automated attacks that can operate far faster than traditional threats.
